New addition: This week in awesome

Inspired by the name of the show This Week in Tech, I am giving you a new weekly blogpost category:

This week in awesome

This week in awesome will feature an awesome thing or story or picture or something else that I think is awesome, and you should definetely check it out. I’ve been posting some stuff about awesomeness before (see here, here and here) and I wanna continue doing that, but give it a common demoninator: This week in awesome.

Maybe I should change the name of my blog…

(By the way: This Week in Tech is also awesome!)

Working for Apple

Originally, this post was a draft from September 29, 2008, named “About the new Apple Store in Glattzentrum”, never finished, never published. It’s the oldest draft I have, so I’m gonna start with this one.

Below is the what I wrote.

As you might have guessed from the photo earlier, I was there last Friday when the second Apple Retail Store in Switzerland opened in Glattzentrum. (Geneva “Rue de Rive” was the first on the day before.)

I didn’t go there like super early and wait in line, but I visited the store about one hour and twenty minutes after it opened, so about at 11:20 AM. And I still was among the first 1500 customers, so I even got the free t-shirt ^^

The applauding and cheering that was going on was pretty much predictable, at least for me, because I’ve seen videos of Apple Stores opening and people buying iPhones on the launch day. There are usually clapping Apple employees all over the place. But the people passing by the store…

I didn’t even finish the sentence! I think I wanted to say: “But the people passing by the store have no idea what’s going on, they think it’s some sort of celebration (which it is!) and deriving from the crowds that form, they think there must be a chance to get something for free or at a reduced price.

No. (Except for the free t-shirt)

It’s just a store opening. But what a fabulous one! I don’t know any other retail store that attracts so many enthusiastic people on opening day like an Apple Store! Correct me if I’m wrong!

As you know from my earlier posts, I then began working for Apple. First at the Apple Store Glattzentrum, then helped the Apple Store Rosenstraße for opening and first two weeks, and also experienced the Apple Store Rue de Rive before finally opening the Apple Store Bahnhofstrasse and staying there. Working for Apple is awesome, although sometimes exhausting, nerve-wracking and frustrating, but always enriching. By the way, if you work for Apple too and are reading this, let me say this (as a matter of fact, let me say this to everyone):

Working for Apple is my dream come true. Literally.

It’s not picture-perfect, but nothing in life is. Anyway I’m not gonna go into detail here. Not because I’m not allowed to, but because there is no need for it. The only thing that gets on my nerves from time to time are narrow-minded customers (that’s what I meant by “sometimes exhausting, nerve-wracking and frustrating”). If there were any unpleasant circumstances within the company I work for, I would rant about them of course; I am not afraid of speaking my mind freely while being monitored. There. I said it.

Of course, like I said, there is nothing to rant about, except for certain customers who do not understand and simply accept certain things (insert noise of grinding teeth here). I don’t blame them for anything, I’ld get mad too if certain things don’t work out as I expected them to. But please, people, chill out. Or sign up for Yoga classes or something.

I could go on and on, but that’s beside the point. By the way, the thankful customers overweigh. I especially like Americans. “Awesome”, “I appreciate it”, “I really appreciate it” is what you hear the most. I love ‘em! And then there are the really thankful customers who bring you sweets like chocolate as a token of their appreciation.

Bottom line: it’s a rollercoaster, depending on the day and the customers. But it definitely builds character.

What happens when you cross the streams?

I’m getting more and more excited about the new Ghostbusters game, although we don’t know all that much about it yet. Why do I get excited then? It’s… it’s simply the Ghostbusters, and they’re awesome!

But here’s an interesting fact: In this post the good folks from joystiq report that there’s gonna be several multiplayer options in the game. But …

The problem, see, is that Atari forgot one important piece of information concerning any Ghostbusters multiplayer experience: What happens when you cross the streams? It’s a vital detail and, frankly, we’re shocked it’s not even mentioned.

Because we know what happens when you do:

Until the game is released, I guess I’ll drive around Paradise City with the legendary Ectomobile (part of the Burnout Paradise Legendary Cars).

Not work

Right now, I could talk about work all the time, because I had a customer on Tuesday morning who drove me insane. I was about to wave the white flag and walk away, not because of technical difficulties, but because of how her personality. But in the end, all went well.
Like I said, I could go into detail here, but I’m not gonna. Life is too short to talk about work all the time!

So I got this new app for my iPhone: Dr. Awesome. And let me tell you, it’s awesome (duh!). You tilt your iPhone to roll a ball around and trap the virtual viruses.

Though it gets repetitive over some time, it’s absolutely worth the CHF 1.10, I mean come on, you spend at least tenfold that amount on your lunch every day. Thank you, Tony, for suggesting Dr. Awesome! Let’s go eat Penne alla Arrabiata!

Another new awesome app I’ve got is Tap Tap Dance. It’s not free, unlike it’s brother Tap Tap Revenge, but if you like Basement Jaxx, Daft Punk and Justice, you’ll be delighted.
I have only been playing Tap Tap Revenge because I didn’t want to spend money (my middle name is Scrooge). But when I tested it on the iPod touches we have on the floor, I had so much fun when I discovered, that there are now notes to play with two and even three fingers.
If you have the rhythm in your blood, buy it. If not, take instrument lessons.

So it seams my Angel has finally decided to move to Miami. If all goes as planned, I will finally see her again in April at her new home. In the meantime I am promoting her blog and helping her with the technical challenges.

Who you gonna call?!

Continueing from my previous post, I’ld like to point out a particular awesome gang: The Ghostbusters!
I mean come on, they have Proton Packs, Ghost Traps, and most important, they drive around in their awesome Ectomobile which makes that unique siren sound. Also, there will be a new video game soon. (Actually, the old trailer is a lot funnier.)

The Ghostbusters are so well known in pop culture, you can ask anyone on the street, on the bus or in your office or school: “Who you gonna call?!” and they’ll respond to you with the only possible answer. Try it out, it’s fun!

Awesome

Being awesome is important. If you’re not awesome, you lose.

awe•some |ˈôsəm|

adjective

extremely impressive or daunting; inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear : the awesome power of the atomic bomb.

informal extremely good; excellent : the band is truly awesome!

ORIGIN late 16th cent. (in the sense [filled with awe] ): from awe + -some.

The word itself may seem overused, especially because most people I know from the US of A apply it to all kinds of things in daily life. Don’t be fooled! Most things in life truly ARE awesome! And for those things that aren’t, if you approach them in an awesome way, they will also become awesome.

Figure out what awesomeness means for you and how you can be awesome in your own way. If you’re having trouble, don’t worry, you’ll achieve awesomeness when the time is right.
