StarCraft II

So, I’ve been playing StarCraft ever since my friend Yves introduced me to it sometime in 2000 or 2001. We both had the same iBook model (12-inch, the first white one, 500 MHz G3), and StarCraft had this glorious feature called “Spawning” where you could install (spawn) it on as many computers as you wanted using the same serial number, and then play a LAN game together. The spawned installations didn’t require a CD to start, but were limited to play only multiplayer games hosted by the “mother installation” with the same serial number. Good enough for us!

I didn’t realize how popular this game had already become, not to mention how popular it will remain! And I didn’t think I would learn to love it just as much as other people do, because I knew I wasn’t good with RTS games, but boy was I wrong!

Then, in 2007, StarCraft II was announced. And it seemed to take forever for Blizzard to release it. But hey, they could take as long as they pleased, because no matter the development time and money of StarCraft II, it would be selling like cold refreshing lemonade on a hot summers day, once released.

Joystiq.com has reported on leaked details and progress along the way, starting with the announcement in 2007 and ending (well, never really ending, but you can’t report on details and progress once the game is out, can you?) in 2010. I would have linked to all these posts during those three years, but never got around to doing so. Anyway, thanks Joystiq.com!

So, did I buy it when it came out? You bet I did. And it was good (compared to another game that had been in development for over 12 years and isn’t nearly as good, I just bought that one to tell my kids one day: “Yes, I owned it”, and to support the folks who finally got it done and made it become reality).

I bought it, but… (and I deserve many slaps in the face for this) only played about 5 rounds of it. And only the first single player mission. Yeah.

Many circumstances and lack of motivation and nostalgia for the original prevented me from getting into StarCraft II. But hey, maybe now during my vacation I can finally find some time for it. Anyway, if you are looking for a great game in this slow-release-month, go get it! You don’t even have to leave your chair, it’s available as digital download.

XBOX 360 died and resurrected

Now that the brief excitement about The Beatles becoming available on iTunes is over, I have your full attention to tell you the story of my resurrected XBOX 360 and the outstanding telephone support from Microsoft (though it had nothing to do with the resurrection).

So on November 12, 2010, my XBOX 360 caught a common “disease” like so many other consoles of that model before: three of the four lights on the front were lit red, indicating a general hardware error, better known as The Red Ring of Death. Of course that name didn’t come from Microsoft, but it was born out of the masses that experienced this error. I myself had only heard about this behaviour, but had never seen it happen anywhere. Then again, having to do with failing hardware almost every day, I had thought about the possibility that it might happen to my XBOX 360 as well, but hoped it would never do so.

I’m not gonna go into detail here. You can google this, look it up on Wikipedia, watch videos on Youtube, etc. I don’t blame anyone, because mistakes happen, or to be more precise: shit happens. I welcome Microsofts decision to extend the warranty of every single console of that specific model on this planet, therefore standing up and indirectly saying: “Yes, we fucked up.” Because nobody deserves my respect more than somebody who admits failure. Admitting failure is not a bad thing (like this guy demonstrates), but staying down and not tackling a failure is failure.

So I thought about replacing my XBOX 360 with a new slim model, not only because it would make less noise in our living room, but also because I thought about going all the way and getting a Kinect bundle. But that would involve spending a lot of money, which wouldn’t hurt my wallet that much, but still it would have been a considerable amount. So I dug up my receipt to find out, if the date of purchase lied more than 3 years in the past. Interestingly enough, my receipt said September 22, 2007, exactly 3 weeks outside the extended warranty.

“Tough luck”, I thought to myself, but tried out the online selfservice anyway. Entering my consoles serial number, it told me the warranty had expired in February 2009. That must mean it was lying around in stock somewhere at GameStop, waiting to go through point of sale, but the warranty clock was already ticking, despite not being in any customers hands already. The website told me, that if I disagree with this date, I could call customer service. So I did.

After a bit of number punching and waiting in line, I was greeted by Carsten. Knowing how it is to be in his position, I explained my situation in a clear and non-angry manner. Like expected, he looked up some of my information, said that he understands that my situation is frustrating, and explained that there is no wiggle room, even if it’s only 3 weeks. Fair enough, I asked him about the price of a repair and also how to transfer my data to a new console, should I purchase one. And this is where I give thumbs up to him and the supporters at Microsoft. Carsten was able to answer all my questions, give me exact numbers for anything to do with money and/or gigabytes, and remain relaxed all the way!

After this, I decided to look up a few auctions of classic XBOX 360 like mine, that would potentially cost less than a repair. But shortly after that, I was sure to find countless guides and tricks on youtube that showed how to repair a RRoD. Some of them were detailed, others were not. Some of them suggested opening the console and replacing the thermal paste and some screws, others did not. But all of the methods involved overheating at least the graphics processor in some way.

So I opened it up, staying grounded all the time (unlike all other electro-stupid people on the videos). Grounding yourself is important, dudes! Of course I broke the warranty seal, but it was worth it. At first, I just wanted to open and prepare my XBOX for thermal grease replacement, which I planned to get later. But after that and concluding from all the videos and different guides I had looked at, I decided to just go ahead and try overheating it without replacing the thermal paste, while the case was open. Sureley enough, that seemed to have sufficient effect already because after overheating (two red lights) and cooling off again, the green lights returned and my resurrected XBOX 360 proudly output the bold startup sequence on our 5.1 surround system and 47-inch TV!

Sweet!

I still have no idea what happened, but because hot material expands, I guess the overheating was to refasten some wire connection on the board that had broken, pushing and bonding it together again. Anyway, I’m glad it worked, though I have a bad feeling that this might only be a temporary fix. Let’s see what the future holds!

Intermittent Awesomeness

Did you miss my “This Week in Awesomeness” post this week? You know why? Because there wasn’t one!

First, although I would like to put out such a post every week, it depends entirely on my mood. This is my blog, I run it. To witness even more egoism, go to The Best Page in the Universe.

Second, not every week something awesome happens. Wait, actually it does. But not everything is worth blogging about. Your opinion on this may differ, but consider the fact that fighting Zombies is a lot more fun and always awesome.

This week in Awesome: ‘Splosion Man

As Awesomeness continues to spread the globe, this man is so awesome and full of excitement, that he literally explodes: ‘Splosion man. Yes, you read correctly.

‘Splosion Man is an XBOX Live Arcade game about – you guessed it – ‘splosions. He will do one thing only: ‘splode. The analog stick moves ‘Splosion Man left and right, and A let’s him explode. Also, B let’s him do the same thing. Oh and X and Y as well, by the way. How do you jump, you ask? Explode.

To put it simple: It’s a platformer. The goal is to get from the left side of the level to the right side (much like Sonic or Mario). It integrates ‘splosion puzzles and higher levels require precise timing. Don’t worry, by the time you get to those higher levels, your ambition to beat the game will already have grown so much, you will not want to put down the controller. ‘Splosion Man is simply adorable. And the music… don’t get me started! Just fantastic. Sounds like you’re in the circus, so orchestral, full of tension and daredevilry. Just watch the videos below and listen! Or get the demo version from XBLA!

If you don’t want to watch all three videos, then just watch the last one!

Oh and yeah, there are boss fights, and there’s multiplayer!

Like countless times before, thank you joystiq.com for pointing out awesome games.

This Week in Awesome: Me

Even though in German self-praise is considered to smell badly, once in a while one may self-praise anyway.

First of all, last Saturday was my birthday. Boo-yeah!

I got this awesome gift from my room mate: Jamiroquais new album Rock Dust Light Star

It’s fresh, it’s funky, it’s disco-ey, it’s fast and slow, it rocks.

Get it for yourself!

Moving on: Remember my earlier post about how nerve-wracking work at the Genius Bar is sometimes? Well, forget what I said about that part. This post from another wordpress blog proves the opposite is true! Scroll down a little to see the photo of my happy customer and me.

Clearly, I am simply awesome.

The following wallpaper can be found at intercacelift.com and is derived from Barney Stinsons quote and poster from “How I Met Your Mother”, as I found out later.

yes, you might wanna click on it and download the larger version

The world as a miniature: Tilt-shift & time-lapse

This. Will. Fascinate. You.

Sam O’Hare shot a quadjillion pictures of the Coachella Festival, then put them all into one video in sequence, added a fake depth of field and sped it up. Now it looks like a miniature, like a dream of match size little people whirling around enjoying their life. It’s like watching ants. It’s fascinating. Check out the video below.

As I found out, this is Sam O’Hares second video. Head over to his site on vimeo to see the other one.

Many thanks to Kurt Sigrist, who recommended the C36 news site to me, through whoms RSS feed I stumbled upon this cute little thing, which they in turn found on fokussiert.com

LAN-Party: CAD 19

This weekend, there will be no This Week in Awesome post, because I am at the CTRL-ALT-DELETE LAN-Party until Sunday afternoon.

I have not been to a LAN-Party in ages. It feels so good to revive the good old non-stop gaming weekends, where you can forget about all your worries and just have fun for 48 hours straight (minus the sleep of course). I got here 4 hours ago and yes, I intend to sleep about 6 hours every night/morning, because I have a to drive back home again on Sunday, and an accident caused by falling asleep behind the wheel is the last thing I need.

If you like to read some of my old posts about my LAN-Party travels in German, feel free to scroll back many pages. I’m not going to link to them, because I just realized that all the posted photos are missing.

This photo was taken not at the current CAD, nor at any previous CAD, but I think is good representation of my peak when I visited many LAN-Parties and took about every electronic gaming thing I had with me.

That’s all for now. Have a nice weekend! More info on the last installement of the CAD, this LAN-Party series which has given us such incredible fun and community over the years, can be found at www.ctrl-alt-delete.info

Last Week in Awesome: Left 4 Dead: The Sacrifice

I hinted at it in last weeks post already, and now I will actually bore tell you about it: The new campaign “The Sacrifice” available for Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2. And because it’s something that happened the week before, I present to you the first ever Last Week in Awesome post.

For those of you who don’t know what L4D is: this post will not interest you! Or maybe it will. Get the game on Steam for Mac or PC and start playing already.

Yes, you read correctly, L4D2 is now available on the Mac. All you need is a decent Mac, Steam installed and a few dollars (or €uros). Free if you already own the PC version. And that’s probably the most awesome thing about it. Because I have already been playing L4D2 on my bootcamp partition, at no extra cost (minus the wait time until the download was complete) I was able to start kicking zombie ass right away. Thank you, Valve! You’re awesome.

The Sacrifice joins the official campaigns in L4D and L4D2 at no extra cost as well (except if you’re playing it on XBOX 360, but hey, seriously, first person shooters are built for mouse and keyboard. Joypad? No thank you. The only first person shooter I accept and appreciate on a console is Halo, and that’s because it’s epic. The scenery, the music, the story, simply epic! Written for the big screen! Though it was first announced for the Mac… I’m getting off topic. Back to the main story.)

All I’m saying is that L4D and it’s latest add-on The Sacrifice are simply awesome (and addicting). I suggest you grab it if you haven’t already done so. I’m not gonna go into detail here, because if you read this far, you either love by my blind glorification or have already played The Sacrifice so many times, that you’ve already unlocked all 5 new achievements.

Oh, I almost forgot! You must read the four-part comic leading up the The Sacrifice, it’s a piece of art. Check it out at l4d.com/comic or get it on your iPhone (explained here how to get it). Ah yes and follow their blog. And watch the trailer shown below (I hope you wake up from nightmares in the middle of the night!)

This Week in Awesome: Sonic 4

Actually, there are two awesome things that came into being this week: Besides Sonic 4, the new Left 4 Dead 2 campaign “The Sacrifice” came out, and not only that, L4D2 is now available for the Mac! Read more about it in next weeks “This Week in Awesome” post.

As you may have noticed when looking at the App Store, Sonic 4 is out. That’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I” to be correct. I guess this means that there will be more episodes coming, although it is not mentioned anywhere. I’ld welcome more Sonic games in this classic style, because lately, the Sonic games haven’t been so good.

Sonic games used to be all about speed, running and dashing, being accelerated by springs and slides along the way. Sonic 1, 2, 3 and Sonic & Knuckles are the titles in question. And now, after a very very very long time, nostalgia returns! Sonic has returned in his classic style of 2D, running through zones and acts, as they are called. It’s out for iPhone and iPod touch already, the XBOX Live Arcade, WiiWare and PlayStaion Network editions will follow in a few days.

As for the iPhone version, I have already played through at least the first two acts of every of the four zones, and I must say it is awesomely entertaining! Here are a few things I like:

  • It’s fast.
  • It’s simple, because it has no story line (besides having to beat Dr. Robotnik).
  • Classic sound effects.

And here are a few things I don’t like:

  • Touchscreen controls (well, duh).
  • You can only play when holding it in the way so that the home button is on the right side. The problem with that is: the headphone port on the iPhone is exactly where I want to place my left hand, and the plugged in headphones cable gets in the way!

Hopefully the latter will be resolved in the future in form of an update, like for example having the game recognize the way the iPhone is tilted (use the accelometer). The former point can of course never be changed, because the touchscreen is given by the hardware. That’s why I’m looking forward to the console version! Hooray for real classic controllers!

Side note: One thing that also threw me off in the beginning was that the screen turns with you when you go through a looping. It makes your head spin (literally). But you get used to it.

Over all, SEGA did a splendid job. Of course it’s nowhere near as fun as the really old classics mentioned in the beginning, but I guess that’s just how it is with us video game conservatives! The best thing about Sonic 4 is when you open the app, the classic “SEEEGAAA!” jingle sounds!

Photos of the ECTO-1

Have you ever witnessed the 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor limo-style endloader combination car (ambulance conversion) [thank you Wikipedia article!] that is the Ecto-1, better known as the Ectomobile?

No?

Me neither.

But I read a blog that has people going to E3 (last year) who have seen it, and have taken some photos of it. Seems to be the real deal. Read the full short article here and see the photos here.

Oh, how I love the Ghostbusters and their method of transportation!
